How to Choose the Right Power Bank for Travel in India
Whether you’re on a weekend trip to Goa or a month-long backpacking route through North India, running out of battery mid-journey is a genuine problem. The right power bank eliminates that stress entirely.
Here’s how to choose one that’s actually suited for travel — not just the one with the biggest number on the box.
Step 1: Calculate How Much Capacity You Actually Need
A modern Indian smartphone (Realme, Xiaomi, Samsung mid-range) has a battery between 4500mAh and 5000mAh. A power bank delivers roughly 60–65% of its rated capacity due to conversion losses.
| Power Bank Capacity | Real Delivered Capacity | Full Charges for 4500mAh Phone |
|---|---|---|
| 5000mAh | ~3000mAh | 0.6x (partial charge) |
| 10000mAh | ~6200mAh | 1.3x (one full + partial) |
| 20000mAh | ~12500mAh | 2.7x (nearly 3 full charges) |
For a day trip: 5000mAh is sufficient. For 2–3 days without reliable power access: 10000mAh. For long travel or charging multiple devices: 20000mAh.
Step 2: Check Airline Rules
DGCA (India’s aviation regulator) and most international airlines allow power banks in cabin baggage only — not checked luggage.
The limit is 100Wh for automatic approval. Most power banks up to 26800mAh are within this limit. Banks between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval. Above 160Wh: not permitted.
To calculate Wh: multiply mAh × 3.7 ÷ 1000. Example: 10000mAh × 3.7 ÷ 1000 = 37Wh (well within limits).
Step 3: Weight and Size Matter More Than You Think
On long trips, every gram adds up. A 20000mAh power bank can weigh 400–500g. A 10000mAh compact model can weigh under 200g.
The SmartFlick Nano X is one of the most impressive options here: 10000mAh with 22W fast charging, yet small enough to fit in a jacket pocket and light enough to barely notice.
Step 4: Look for Pass-Through Charging
Pass-through charging means the power bank can charge your device while it is itself being charged. This is useful in airport lounges or hotel rooms when you have limited sockets.
Not all power banks support this — check the product description before buying.
Step 5: Built-In Cable vs. External Cable
A power bank with a built-in cable removes one item from your travel bag. The SmartFlick MagFlick 2.0 has a built-in Type-C cable — charge your phone directly without carrying an extra cable.
